My regular Thur routine of estates sales did NOT start out very well. The first sale I went to at 9 am didn't actually open until 11. The second sale was full of sky high prices, but it didn't really matter because I didn't see anything I wanted any way- not even the Ralph Lauren sweater for $65. The third sale was so sparse that I don't even recall any of the details- except I didn't buy anything. This is NOT my usual pattern- I was hot, tired and discouraged and decided to head home when I saw a sign for am estate sale that I hadn't marked in the classifieds.
Luckily, I can rally into a buying mode in the blink of eye, because the sale was great. Lots of vintage crafting and sewing supplies. A precious pin cushion with a velvet emery strawberry, gold rick rack, velvet leaves for crafting, thimbles, lace and sewing baskets.
A bag of these little gold curtain clips- you can use them for hanging your curtains, or to make an easy to change valance. I've used them to clip a lace scarf to the cafe curtain on my back door, and Karla uses them to clip vintage hankies to the top of her sheer panel curtains. They also make cute hangers for craft projects.
They also look nice just resting in a gold trim bowl.
I found a pretty blue velvet sewing box with a nice quilted lining. The lining has a little wear and tear, but I kind of liked that- it adds to the character. And it makes a great place to keep your Girl Scout pin.
This ca 1900 crazy quilt is so heavy that you almost don't even want to touch it on a 95 degree day, but I know I'll love how cozy it will look on cool evening in October.
What IS going to feel nice on a hot July night is these old and soft cotton pillowcases with a lace insert and lace edge. I'm not sure what the initial is- maybe "M" for MINE.
One more estate sale find- this Bessie Pease Gutmann 1906 print- it's called Making Up. I love the old Eastlake wood grain frame, too.
I finished up my shopping with a smile on my face and headed home to pack up to go to Karla's to craft. I followed through on my plan to take everything on the top of my craft table (and the boxes of paper on the floor) to Karla's. All that was left on table was the telephone book I use to glue on, handy wipes and a tub of scissors. (and it's stayed that way- the tags on the table are the projects I worked on at Karla's.)
I met up with Shawn, Marilyn and Gwen at Karla's. Karla had a made an initial tag for each of us. I love the rich neutral style of my tag- and that flocked wallpaper- yummy!
Shawn brought her Cuttle bug and we were all amazed at what you could do with it- cut fabric flowers, emboss card stock, tags, sheet music- the possibilities are endless.
Gwen has lived in France and buys antiques by the 40 foot container--I think it's a big deal when I fill up the back of my Scion- anyway, Gwen brought lots of wonderful French ephemera, ribbons, lace- yummy yummy stuff.
And French text pages (and card stock) look great cuttled.
Gwen brought us each some great French ribbon, game pieces and tiles. She has so much cool stuff, we think she should start a blog, open an Etsy shop and share some of her French flair.
I used the Cuttle bug to emboss card stock and then inked the card- easy background.
Karla had her binding machine out, and I used it to bind little manila envelopes into a book.
Crafting can be a kind of solitary activity- cutting and pasting by yourself late into the night, so it's fun to be able to share a day laughing with and learning from other people that like the same things that you do.
Bumper sticker for the day: Grab a friend and craft something!
