I was going to write about Karla and my semi annual trip to the flea markets in Sparks and White Cloud Kansas yesterday, but my friends Lucy and Steve asked me to help set up an estate sale. I love setting up estate sales- my own house is a disorganized mess, but sorting through, cleaning up and displaying someone else's stuff is so much more satisfying than dealing with your own stuff. I got tagged by Karla to list 7 weird things about myself, and that is number one.
- would rather straighten up someone else's house
- don't like to get my face wet- I'll swim (with my head held up), go on boats- I'm not afraid of water- I just don't like it on my face- this goes so far that I don't even wash my face with soap and water- I used those premoistened cleansing pads.
- I passed all four parts of the CPA exam on the first try, but I failed the follow up ethics exam. Now, don't take that the wrong way- it doesn't mean I'm dishonest. The test had to do with who it was ethical to take client referrals from, and how you could list yourself on company letterhead. I was so anxious to get my actual certificate that I raced through the ethics test the first time, but the second time, I aced it.
- I was born on two days. My parents lived in North Dakota, but the hospital was across the river in Minnesota. Minnesota was on daylight savings time, but North Dakota wasn't. My Mom went to the hospital about 10:30 on Jun 12 in North Dakota time, and I was born about an hour later at 11:30 on Jun 12 in North Dakota time, but since it was in Minnesota, it was the 12:30 on Jun 13. WEIRD,huh? ;)
- The picture at the top of this blog has NOTHING to do with anything in the blog!
- Although the tag was for 7 things, I'm a little bit of a rebel, and I'm only going to list 6!
So- the flea market. Karla and I have been going to the flea market twice a year for a long time, and we always have a great time- even if we don't find something fab to buy (but we usually do), there's the fair type food to save the day. I vary what I eat, sometimes nachos, sometimes gyros, sometimes brisket, sometimes a fried onion blossom- I even had deep fried Oreos this year, but Karla always gets a funnel cake. She talks about the funnel cakes all year long. We bought a few things and decided to get a little something to eat- so we split a great GRILLED pork tenderloin- usually they are fried, but this was grilled and great. I asked Karla if she wanted funnel cake yet, but she was "saving" it. We shopped on, I got a pretty flow blue plate, this funky shell brooch in the box, a pretty candy box, a little girls floral dress. Karla picked up some great jewelry, a frame and a sparkly German glitter letter "K" for her flea market cart. I got my fried Oreos, we had some kettle korn, but still no funnel cake- Karla was waiting in anticipation. I bought these old organ keys- I have no idea what to do with them, but aren't they cool? One of my favorite finds was the WWII military photo frame to add to my collection of WWII homefront patriotic items. And that handsome young soldier in the picture- that's my dear old Dad!
It started to drizzle and vendors started to cover up their tables, and we hustled around, desperately looking for someone to sell us SOMETHING. I mean, after all, we had MONEY in our pockets and room in our carts. We did manage a few more purchases, including these great deco bridge tallies. Then it was funnel cake time. Karla got her funnel cake, a whole plate full, and it was steaming hot. We huddled under the awning of the funnel cake trailer trying to stay dry. Karla took a few nibble off one side and I tore a piece off the other side. It was GOOD- and we were all sticky and our fingers were covered in powdered sugar. And then it happened, the UNTHINKABLE- the weight of the grease and the rain made the paper plate collapse, and the funnel cake tumbled to the ground.
I picked it up in 2 seconds flat, but you should have seen Karla's face- it was like the little kid who looses the top to their ice cream cone. I put the funnel cake back on the plate, but Karla said (in a very small voice), "I can't eat that- it was on the ground". It only had two little pieces of grass on it, and wasn't muddy at all.
I would have eaten it- and I guess that could be #7 on my list of weird things. But, the funnel cake make saw what happened, and he made Karla a new funnel cake- what a NICE guy!
I'm working for a couple hours this afternoon at the open house at the antique mall where I have a booth- the open house is a tribute to the Kentucky Derby. Back in the 1930's, a horse that won the Derby lived in the stables that were once on the grounds of the antique mall. After that, its finishing up on pricing for Art in the Park tomorrow.
