I have a serious button love. When I see a box or jar of buttons, I'm overcome with the urge to dump it out, run my fingers over the buttons and search for button treasures. When I heard about Analise from Sugar*Sugar's request "Show Us Your Buttons", I'm happy to share my treasures.
When I buy a big group of buttons, I try to sort the whites, creams, ivorys etc, clean them, pull threads and put them in this fishbowl. I usually hold out the mother of pearl and carved buttons for bigger & better things.
Then I sort by color- and try to pull out the bright colors.
I'm always on the lookout for "special" buttons.
Here are some I've found.
19th century glass calicos and stencils.
Gloved hands with rhinestones ready to serve you a milkshake.
Glass nursery rhyme buttons from the 1930's- Humpty Dumpty and Old King Cole.
Really BIG pink buttons.
Bakelite buttons, mixed in with some Bakelite buckles, dice and mah jong tiles.
And sometimes, you luck out and EVERY button in the box is GREAT!
I also have a small collection of salesman's sample button cards.
A few years ago, I went to the auction of a button collector- button heaven. Most of the buttons had been tied to button boards.
Tied with pipe cleaners or telephone wire- that's the way a true button collector does it- to keep from damaging buttons.
All rose buttons.
Now aren't you glad you asked to see my buttons?
